Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit

Description: Employers are encouraged to hire and train apprentices in certain skilled trades in the construction, industrial and manufacturing sectors. Employers would be eligible for up to a 30% refundable tax credit on wages paid after May 18, 2004, to eligible apprentices during the first 36 months of the apprenticeship. The maximum tax credit per apprentice would be $5,000 per year up to a maximum of $15,000 over the 36 month period.

 

Eligibility:

  • Eligible apprentices would be in a qualifying skilled trade and must be hired before January 1, 2012.
  • Qualifying skilled trades include designated industrial, construction and motive power, and some call centre & service trades.

Canada Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit

Description: The Government of Canada 2006 Budget introduced an Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit in order to encourage employers to hire new apprentices in eligible trades. This measure provides eligible employers a non-refundable tax credit equal to 10 per cent of the salaries and wages paid to qualifying apprentices in the first two years of their contract, to a maximum credit of $2,000 per year per apprentice.

 

Eligibility:

  • Eligible apprentices must be working in a qualifying Red Seal trade and other economically strategic apprenticeship programs.
  • Eligible employers will be businesses that incur salaries and wages in respect of qualifying apprentices.

Ontario Co-Operative Education Tax Credit

Description: Incentive for businesses to hire students enrolled in a recognized post-secondary education program including leading academic institutions such as the University of Waterloo, University of Toronto or Queen’s University and gain access to first-class human resources, on a "just-in-time," low cost basis. Employers receive a refundable tax credit of 10-15% of eligible costs up to a maximum of $1,000 per each student co-op placement.

 

Eligibility:

  • Work placement is a minimum of 10 weeks to a maximum of four months.
  • A full 16 month work term could constitute four separate qualifying work placements.

 

Ontario Job Connect

Description: A community resource program that provides youth services to assist people who need help finding and keeping jobs. Employers will be provided with a negotiated wage training subsidy of up to $4.00/hour for up to 16 weeks to a maximum of $4,000 per employee depending on the employee’s skills and length of training.

 

Eligibility:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age, out of work, out of school, not currently in a training program.
  • Not eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board benefits.
  • Between 24 and 29 years of age and receiving Ontario Works benefits, Ontario Disability Support Program benefits or unemployed for a minimum of 6 months.

 

Ontario Works

Description: This province-wide program assists social assistance recipients in finding and securing employment. Includes practical job skills training, matching and referral services to assist companies in filling a variety of positions. The program is funded by the province but delivered by Ontario municipalities. Employers will be provided with a negotiated financial incentive of up to $4,000 per new employee from the local municipal administrator.

 

Eligibility:

  • Applicant that will sign employment participation agreement.
  • Individuals that are unemployed and on social assistance but have some skills and qualifications.

 

Ontario Targeted Wage Subsidy Program http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/tcu/employers/wageSubsidy.html

 

Description: The program assists unemployed Employment Insurance (EI) eligible individuals to develop necessary skills to obtain and maintain employment. Employers who hire individuals who face barriers to employment are provided with temporary wage subsidies. Financial assistance varies on a case-by-case basis but generally should not exceed 60% of the total wages paid to the individual for the period of the agreement.

 

Eligibility:

  • The average duration of the subsidies agreement is between 26-30 weeks but may last up to 78 weeks
  • Unemployed individuals who are currently receiving EI benefits or have been on EI within the 36 months prior to the date of requesting assistance.

 

Ontario Summer Jobs Service

Description: The program makes available a partial wage subsidy of $2 per hour hiring incentive to businesses that apply. Hiring students during the summer provides employers with workers who are ready to take on seasonal projects and/or who can replace vacationing full-time employees. Local colleges or youth employment centres screen applicants to match them to your job needs.

 

Eligibility:

  • Students and young people aged 15 to 24 who are planning to return to school in the fall
  • Wage support for jobs can last up to 16 weeks beginning in April and ending by September 30
